How much keywords should I use to rank a blog post and how long is the recommended number of words?

How much keywords should I use to rank a blog post and how long is the recommended number of words?
I try to stay under 10 primary keywords and less than 5 words long. But I have seen blog posts rank for hundreds of keywords it really depends on topic and length of the blog post.
