Ranking factors we can control

Optimizing product pages for search: Google has signaled that adding more content could confuse the search intent. For a product page, apparently, they expect to see very little content.
So if we're not using content to rank product pages, how can we rank them? Supporting content (articles) that link to them, interlinking, etc...what else?
Obviously, ecommerce is highly competitive, and in a saturated market (such as apparel, for instance), not every pair of chinos can be on page 1. So what are the factors we can control to get our clients' products on page 1?

Supporting content, innerlinking, and most importantly BACKLINKS!
However, if you build up enough topical relevance through blogging and supporting content, and then interlink to product pages, that will work too.
Sometimes even better than backlinks...
