I recently had a client who’s new webmaster decided to change all of the url pathways without letting us know or adding redirects. There is a lot to unpack here, but my first observation is the most interesting:
Our top ranking pages have remained in their top positions for several weeks now, even though they go to a 404 not found.
I would never have imagined Google would keep pages ranked that go to a Page not found for more than a day or two, let alone for over a month and after multiple crawls of the website.

Because the links did not go away Google trusts them. The algorithm will trust historical data rather than today’s data.
