What is the best way to deal with old blog posts that have few visitors or no visitors at all in the last 16 months? Should I delete or just update?

if you find them relevant to other topics, you can merge them. If they have some kind of link equity, you can redirect them to relevant pages and if the content is very thin you can get rid of them. It depends on different scenarios as well.
You need to understand why they no longer get much traffic.
Did they get pushed so far deep into the site that little PageRank is flowing to them? That's a common problem with blogs. I call it Website Subduction.
Did the queries die? You can check that with Google Trends.
Is the content outdated and therefore less relevant to what people are searching for today?
Did they lose backlinks that were once helping?
There's a lot to look for before you make a decision you can't undo.
